A significant portion of the Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway, one of Uttar Pradesh's flagship infrastructure projects valued at approximately Rs 4,200 crore, has been found to have collapsed owing to alleged lapses in construction quality. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) took immediate action by imposing a three-year ban on PNC Infratech Limited, the private firm responsible for executing a major section of the expressway.
Under the penalty order, PNC Infratech will be disqualified from bidding for any new tenders issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), NHAI, or their subordinate agencies for the next three years. The ban represents one of the sternest disciplinary measures taken against a contractor involved in national highway development.
The expressway, designed to cut travel time between Lucknow and Kanpur to under two hours, was being constructed as a greenfield four-lane corridor spanning roughly 175 kilometres. It was envisioned as a key component of Uttar Pradesh's efforts to modernise its road network and stimulate economic growth in the fertile Bundelkhand and Awadh regions.
Sources within the NHAI confirmed that structural integrity tests revealed the affected stretch had subsided, raising serious concerns about the quality of materials used and the workmanship during construction. The authority stated that the collapse was not an isolated incident but pointed to systematic deficiencies in the project execution.
PNC Infratech has historically been one of the largest highway-construction companies in India, with a portfolio of projects across multiple states. Industry analysts note that the three-year ban could significantly impact the company's revenue pipeline, given its heavy dependence on government contracts.
The Uttar Pradesh government has expressed concern over the delay and is expected to explore options for completing the remaining stretches through alternative contractors. Officials have assured commuters that traffic diversions are in place and safety has not been compromised on operational segments of the expressway.
