Southeast Asian e-commerce platform Lazada on Wednesday released details from its 9.9 Mega Brands Sale, revealing a marked shift toward higher-value purchases and stronger seller performance compared to its June 6 promotional event earlier this year.

The number of brands achieving at least US$1 million in gross merchandise value — a standard metric for total sales volume on a platform — rose by nearly 10 per cent from the 6.6 campaign. Brands hitting US$100,000 and US$500,000 milestones also saw growth, suggesting not just top sellers pulling ahead but a broadening base of participating brands finding success during the September event.

Perhaps the most notable figure was that transactions valued at US$100 or more accounted for almost 60 per cent of total GMV during the campaign. That is a significant indicator: shoppers were not merely browsing for low-cost items but were spending meaningfully per order. Industry analysts have long tracked the average basket size on Southeast Asian e-commerce platforms as a barometer of market maturity, and the data suggests consumers are growing more comfortable purchasing pricier goods online across the region.

Lazada credited several strategic initiatives for the improved seller outcomes. Its LazMall branded section — the platform's dedicated space for official and verified brand stores — continued to draw consumers looking for authenticity and reliability. Affiliate-led product discovery, where content creators and influencers drive traffic through social media links, also played a role in funneling buyers toward participating brands. Meanwhile, Lazada pointed to its AI-guided shopping tools, which use machine-learning algorithms to personalise product recommendations and streamline the path from browsing to checkout.

The 9.9 sale is one of the two biggest annual promotional events on Southeast Asian e-commerce calendars, alongside the year-end double-digit campaigns. Strong results here typically signal consumer confidence heading into the final quarter, a period when platforms compete fiercely for shoppers' attention and wallet share.
