Chennai-based restaurant group Nandhana Foods has secured a $30 million investment from L Catterton, one of Asia's leading consumer-focused private equity firms, as it looks to scale up its operations across South India. The injection of capital will be used primarily to expand the footprint of the company's two flagship brands — Nandhana Palace and RNR (Royal NRI) — which together have built a strong reputation for authentic South Indian cuisine across multiple cities in the region.

L Catterton, originally spun out from Catterton Partners, has a track record of investing in food and beverage companies throughout the subcontinent. Its partnership with Nandhana Foods signals confidence in the organized quick-service restaurant segment in southern India, where demand for branded dining experiences has surged in recent years alongside rising disposable incomes and changing urban lifestyles.

Nandhana Palace, known for its extensive menu of Andhra-style and other South Indian dishes, operates several outlets in Tamil Nadu and has gradually expanded into neighbouring states. The RNR brand, positioned at a slightly more premium casual-dining level, has similarly seen steady growth. Industry observers note that the combined portfolio gives the company a diversified presence across different price points — a strategy that tends to weather economic fluctuations better than a single-segment approach.

The new investment is expected to fund both company-owned and franchise locations, with a focus on high-footfall markets in cities like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kochi, and Pune. Analysts say the money could also help modernise operations — including digital ordering platforms, delivery partnerships, and supply-chain improvements — that have become essential after the pandemic reshaped how consumers interact with restaurants.

Nandhana Foods' founders have previously spoken about their ambition to become one of the most recognised South Indian dining chains in the country. With this fresh backing from L Catterton, that goal appears to be moving closer to reality, even as the sector continues to see intense competition from both national chains and regional players.
