New Delhi, September 11: Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto arrived in the Indian capital on Friday to participate in the 18th BRICS Summit, one of the most significant multilateral gatherings bringing together leaders from some of the world's fastest-growing economies.
Upon his arrival at Indira Gandhi International Airport, President Prabowo was received by Minister of State (MoS) for External Affairs Satish Chandra Dubey, who extended warm greetings on behalf of the Indian government. The reception highlighted the importance India places on its relationship with Southeast Asia's largest economy.
In a statement following the meeting at the airport, officials said, "We look forward to advancing our shared vision of greater cooperation, development and prosperity" between the two nations. The comments underscored the mutual interest in strengthening bilateral ties across multiple fronts, including trade, investment, and regional security.
The BRICS grouping — comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and recently expanded members including Indonesia — has increasingly become a platform for discussing reform of global financial institutions and promoting South-South cooperation. Indonesia's participation in BRICS reflects Jakarta's strategy of balancing relationships across major power blocs while asserting its role in shaping global governance.
India and Indonesia share a long-standing partnership rooted in the historical Non-Aligned Movement, with both countries having been founding members alongside other Asian and African nations that refused to align with either Cold War superpower. In recent years, strategic collaboration has expanded to include maritime security, defence cooperation, and cultural exchanges under what both governments have called their "Comprehensive Strategic Partnership."
During the summit, President Prabowo is expected to engage with fellow BRICS leaders on issues ranging from economic recovery and climate action to geopolitical developments affecting the Indo-Pacific region. Bilateral discussions with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi are also anticipated to cover defence manufacturing, energy cooperation, and connectivity projects linking the two nations through the ASEAN-India framework.
