India's semiconductor industry is undergoing a remarkable transformation, with new data revealing that more than half of the total funding invested in the sector since its inception has been raised since 2025 alone. The shift signals a decisive moment in the country's push to become a global manufacturing hub for chip production — a goal that has been central to the Indian government's economic strategy since the launch of its ₹76,000 crore incentive scheme in April 2021.
Analysts attribute the surge to a combination of factors: aggressive policy support from New Delhi, growing interest from multinational corporations seeking to diversify their supply chains away from China, and a series of bilateral deals struck during high-profile international engagements. Recent diplomatic activity at the BRICS Summit added further momentum, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi holding discussions with visiting heads of state, including Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., to explore deeper technology and infrastructure cooperation between the two nations.
Meanwhile, on the broader economic front, Russian President Vladimir Putin unveiled a new international insurance mechanism aimed at facilitating trade settlement in national currencies — a development that could have long-term implications for how India and other emerging markets approach cross-border transactions amid continuing sanctions-related uncertainty.
The semiconductor boom, however, remains the most closely watched development. Major domestic and international players have committed to establishing fabrication plants, packaging units, and design centers across states such as Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Gujarat. Industry experts note that while the funding trajectory is encouraging, challenges remain around skilled workforce development, reliable power supply, and sustained policy consistency.
Government officials have acknowledged these hurdles but expressed confidence that India is on track to capture a meaningful share of the projected $300 billion global semiconductor market within the next decade.
