India has issued a strong condemnation of a drone attack carried out by Yemen's Houthi rebels near the Islamic holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia, marking yet another escalation in the recurring cross-border strikes that have plagued the region.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in New Delhi released a statement expressing deep concern over the incident and reiterating India's firm support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Saudi Arabia. The diplomatic move underscores India's continued strategic partnership with the Gulf kingdom, which remains one of the largest destinations for Indian expatriates and a critical hub for energy supplies.
Saudi authorities confirmed that their air defence systems successfully intercepted and destroyed the drone before it could penetrate the prohibited airspace surrounding Mecca. The interception took place south of the city, preventing any casualties or damage to the holy site. No immediate claims of responsibility were made beyond what is consistent with Houthi operational patterns, but regional observers widely attributed the attack to the Iran-backed militia.
This incident is the latest in a series of Houthi drone and missile attacks targeting Saudi infrastructure and nearby areas, part of a broader conflict that has its roots in Yemen's prolonged civil war.
