New Delhi has sent a clear message to Washington that India will not be deterred from pursuing its strategic interests in Russia regardless of American sanctions legislation.
Union Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh stated firmly that India continues to follow an independent foreign policy framework and that all significant decisions regarding bilateral ties with Moscow would be guided solely by what serves the welfare and security of the Indian people.
The comments come against growing apprehensions in diplomatic circles that the United States, under the current administration, may introduce or accelerate sanctions measures targeting countries maintaining robust defence and energy partnerships with Russia. New Delhi has been a consistent purchaser of Russian military equipment and crude oil, transactions that have drawn scrutiny from Western capitals.
Singh emphasised that India's approach to international relations has always been rooted in sovereignty and mutual respect. He reiterated that the country would neither succumb to pressure nor allow external mandates to shape its foreign policy priorities.
Analysts note that India-Russia defence cooperation dates back decades, with Moscow supplying roughly half of India's military hardware over the years. Key platforms such as the Sukhoi fighter jets, S-400 missile defence systems, and nuclear submarines form critical components of India's defence infrastructure. Any disruption to this partnership would pose significant challenges for India's security architecture.
On the energy front, India's purchases of discounted Russian crude oil surged dramatically after the Ukraine conflict began, offering relief to Indian consumers and helping manage inflation pressures. Energy experts point out that Russian crude remains economically attractive and logistically viable for India's refining sector.
Diplomatic sources indicate that while India values its strategic autonomy, it also seeks to maintain constructive dialogue with the United States. New Delhi has previously communicated its position through various bilateral channels, stressing that its engagement with Russia is transparent and driven by legitimate national requirements.
The Indian government's stance reflects a broader pattern of strategic independence that has characterised New Delhi's foreign policy since independence — balancing relationships with major powers without aligning exclusively with any bloc.
