West Bengal police arrested independent candidate Saiful Islam on Saturday from Baharampur in the Murshidabad district, dealing another setback to the contest for the Rajnagar assembly bypoll. The arrest comes under a case registered during the 2021 Vidhan Sabha elections, when clashes broke out between rival factions in the area. Authorities stated that Islam, who is associated with the Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP), was taken into custody as part of ongoing investigation into the incident.
This development follows closely on the heels of the arrest of Congress candidate Milan Pradhan from the neighbouring Nandigram constituency, who was picked up the previous day. Pradhan's case is rooted in a land acquisition dispute stretching back nearly two decades, connected to long-standing agitation against rehabilitation policies in the region.
The dual arrests have cast a shadow over the already tense political atmosphere surrounding these bypolls. Both Rajnagar and Nandigram had seen heated electoral contests in 2021, and authorities are now scrutinising candidates with past legal entanglements. Police have not ruled out further action in similar cases as the election schedule progresses.
Legal experts note that an arrested candidate can continue campaigning but cannot hold office if convicted, though procedural delays in India's judicial system often leave the outcome uncertain until well after voting takes place. The Election Commission has meanwhile reiterated that candidates facing pending cases are permitted to contest, provided they meet the standard eligibility criteria.
