The India Meteorological Department's (IMD) Guwahati division has issued a detailed weather advisory warning of active thunderstorm activity and heavy rainfall expected in five districts across Assam. The alert, issued amid the ongoing monsoon season, cautions residents about the likelihood of lightning strikes alongside intense downpours over the coming days.
According to IMD officials, the affected districts are likely to experience sporadic but vigorous thunderstorm activity, with weather systems moving through the state bringing localized heavy rainfall. The meteorological department has highlighted that thunderstorms in the region are frequently accompanied by strong wind gusts, which can trigger tree falls and power disruptions in vulnerable areas.
Officials at the State Disaster Management Authority have been put on high alert. Emergency response teams in the impacted districts are being coordinated through the district collector's office, with early warning messages disseminated via SMS and radio to residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas.
The IMD forecast noted that the atmospheric conditions over central and eastern Assam have turned unstable, leading to the formation of convective cloud systems responsible for the anticipated storms. While no specific dates were pinned down with certainty, the department indicated that the worst weather impact is expected within the next 48 hours.
Assam has seen repeated weather-related disruptions in recent years, with flash floods and landslides causing significant damage during monsoon months. Officials have reminded commuters to avoid unnecessary travel on state highways and urged farmers to secure standing crops against possible hail or heavy deluge.
