A second-year student at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay took his own life on Thursday evening, sparking outrage and protests across the prestigious campus. The student, who was pursuing his degree in the Department of Energy Science and Engineering, had been caught earlier that day using a mobile phone during a scheduled examination.
According to institute officials, the student uploaded images of the question paper to the AI chatbot ChatGPT while writing the exam. He was subsequently identified and detained by exam invigilators. IIT Bombay authorities stated that no formal disciplinary proceedings or charges were initiated against the student in connection with the incident.
Following the episode, the student reportedly left the examination hall and returned to his hostel room. He was discovered unresponsive later that evening, and despite efforts, he was pronounced dead.
This tragedy marks the third student suicide at IIT Bombay since the beginning of 2026, reigniting debates about mental health support systems and academic pressure within India's top engineering institutions. Student groups on campus organized demonstrations shortly after the news broke, demanding accountability and improved psychological counseling services for students.
The incident has also drawn attention to the growing role of generative AI tools like ChatGPT in academic settings and how institutions are struggling to address AI-related exam misconduct. Education experts note that the intersection of AI technology and academic integrity represents an emerging challenge for universities worldwide, one that requires updated policies and empathetic approaches rather than purely punitive measures.
