Mumbai's food safety regulators dealt a sharp blow to one of the city's most cherished culinary institutions on Tuesday, suspending the food licence of Olympia Coffee House after a damning inspection revealed severe hygiene violations at the iconic Colaba eatery.
During the surprise check conducted by food safety officers, inspectors found a urinal situated directly within the establishment's food storage area — a glaring disregard for basic sanitation standards under India's Food Safety and Standards Act.
The discovery prompted immediate action, with authorities permanently suspending the coffee house's food licence until all compliance issues are resolved. The verdict has sent shockwaves through the local community, as Olympia Coffee House has been a staple of Colaba's streetscape for decades, drawing regulars from literary circles, artists, and everyday Mumbaikars alike.
The same drive saw seven other food establishments across Mumbai face similar licence suspensions over varying degrees of hygiene lapses. Among those penalised was Vishwas Sweets and Snacks, a popular sweet shop that was also found operating without adequate sanitary conditions.
Other prominent targets of the raid included a Blinkit warehouse and a canteen at Nair Hospital, both cited for poor hygiene standards. Authorities seized milk and dairy products worth over Rs 7 lakh during the operation, citing contamination concerns.
Food safety officials stated that the comprehensive inspection was part of a broader crackdown aimed at ensuring that food businesses across the city adhere to mandated cleanliness protocols. Officers emphasised that the presence of a urinal in a food storage zone represented an unacceptable risk to public health.
Olympia Coffee House, much like the legendary Cambridge Bookworm nearby, holds a special place in Mumbai's cultural memory.
