Hyderabad's most recognizable landmark is once again transforming into a vibrant symbol of devotion as the colossal 69-foot idol of Lord Ganesha at Khairatabad nears completion ahead of the upcoming Ganesh Chaturthi festival.
Known formally as 'Panchamukha Sankatahara Ganapati' — meaning the five-faced remover of obstacles — the towering structure has been under construction for several months and is expected to be ready for public darshan by Sunday. The Telangana Governor has been invited to attend the unveiling ceremony, underscoring the cultural and religious significance attached to the idol.
The project has employed approximately 150 skilled artisans, sculptors, painters, and craftsmen who have worked tirelessly to bring the massive figure to life. The team includes specialists in clay modeling, fine painting, gold leaf application, and decorative arts — each contributing to different aspects of the idol's elaborate design.
Khairatabad has long been home to one of Hyderabad's most famous Ganesh idols, drawing tens of thousands of devotees every year during the Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations. The area, located in the heart of the city, sees massive crowds during the ten-day festival period, with the idol serving as both a religious centerpiece and a major civic attraction.
This year's iteration follows a similar tradition but with enhanced artistic detail. The five-faced representation of Ganesha is considered particularly auspicious in Hindu mythology, with each face representing a different aspect of the deity — lordship, prosperity, wisdom, power, and grace.
The immersion ceremony, or Visarjan, is expected to take place in the coming days after the festival blessings conclude. Authorities have made extensive preparations for crowd management and traffic diversion along the busy Khairatabad corridor during the event.
