The image of Michael Jackson leaning at a sharp, gravity-defying angle during his 1988 debut of the "Smooth Criminal" routine etched itself into pop culture history. For decades, fans and performers alike wondered how he achieved what seemed physically impossible — tilting forward at nearly a 45-degree angle without falling. The answer lay not in superhuman balance but in an ingeniously engineered pair of shoes, for which Jackson obtained a patent in 1993 alongside collaborators Wayne Garfield and Mark Taylor.
The patent, formally titled "Anti-Gravity Shoe," described a footwear system featuring a concealed mechanical apparatus built into the heel that could engage with a correspondingly modified stage floor. When the performer stepped into position, a pin or rod from the shoe's heel locked into a receptacle embedded in the platform, anchoring the foot and allowing the body to tilt forward while remaining securely supported. Once the moment passed, the mechanism released and the dancer could continue moving as normal. The entire system was designed to be invisible to the audience, preserving the illusion of weightless suspension mid-air.
Jackson first popularized the technique during the Bad World Tour in 1988 and later refined it for the Music Television awards performance and the official music video, where the effect appeared even more dramatic due to camera angles and editing. The patent filing came five years after the move's debut, suggesting the technology evolved through live performance experience before being formally documented and protected.
Beyond its entertainment value, the invention represented one of the few pieces of theatrical stage technology bearing Jackson's name on the patent certificate. It also underscored the meticulous production standards he brought to every aspect of his performances — from choreography to costume design to stagecraft. Though no further commercial variants of the shoe were widely produced, the concept influenced subsequent stage act designs and remains a celebrated footnote in the intersection of music, engineering, and performance art.
Wayne Garfield, who co-developed the patent, had previously worked with Jackson on various performance innovations. Mark Taylor, an electrical engineer, contributed technical expertise to the mechanism's design. Together, they created something that gave an already legendary performer a visual signature that has never been fully replicated live on stage.
