In a significant move aimed at revitalizing the state's school education system, the Himachal Pradesh government announced a comprehensive uniform and infrastructure transformation for CBSE-affiliated schools on Thursday. The decision was taken during a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu at the Education Department headquarters in Shimla.
Under the new guidelines, students enrolled in CBSE schools across the state will wear a distinctive green-based uniform, replacing the previously mandated attire. The color scheme was reportedly chosen to reflect the state's lush natural landscape and promote a sense of environmental consciousness among students. Female teachers will now be required to wear light lilac-purple outfits, while male educators will don light blue ensembles, marking a departure from conventional color norms in the teaching profession.
Beyond uniforms, the meeting also addressed structural improvements across school campuses. Educational institutions will undergo a visual revamp featuring olive green and sand beige tones for walls, buildings, and common areas. Officials described the initiative as part of a larger strategy to create conducive learning environments that inspire both students and teaching staff.
Education Department sources indicated that the new dress code framework will be implemented gradually, with a six-month transition period allowed for schools to procure the updated uniforms. A special committee has been constituted under the supervision of the Additional Chief Secretary (Education) to monitor compliance and address any logistical challenges faced by underprivileged families during the rollout.
The announcement has sparked mixed reactions. While many parents have welcomed the change, citing aesthetic and psychological benefits, some community groups have raised concerns about the financial burden on economically disadvantaged households who may need to purchase entirely new wardrobes. The state government is expected to announce a subsidy or uniform assistance scheme in the coming weeks to ease the transition.
This uniform reform comes amid a broader education agenda of the Sukhu administration, which has prioritized improving infrastructure, teacher training, and student engagement across Himachal Pradesh's 4,000-plus government and aided schools.
