Helsinki has secured the number one position on the Global Destination Sustainability Index, overtaking competitors from across Europe and beyond to be recognized as the world's most sustainable travel destination. The ranking, compiled by Green Destinations, evaluates cities worldwide against a comprehensive set of sustainability criteria covering environmental protection, social responsibility, and economic resilience in the tourism sector.
The Finnish capital earned top marks for its commitment to carbon neutrality, having pledged to reach net-zero emissions by 2035 — a target that places it among the most ambitious in the world. Extensive public transportation networks powered increasingly by renewable energy, widespread cycling infrastructure, and strict waste management policies contributed significantly to its score. Helsinki also scored highly on nature accessibility, with more than half of residents living within a ten-minute walk of green spaces or water bodies.
The city's hospitality sector played a role as well, with numerous hotels and restaurants obtaining eco-certifications, reducing single-use plastics, and sourcing locally produced food. Tourism boards have increasingly promoted responsible travel practices, encouraging visitors to explore the city sustainably through electric ferries, bike rentals, and public transit passes bundled with attraction tickets.
Other Nordic cities featured prominently in the upper rankings, reflecting the region's long-standing investment in green policy. However, Helsinki's combination of urban planning, clean energy adoption, and community engagement around sustainability set it apart from peers. Representatives from the city noted that the recognition reinforces their ongoing efforts but cautioned that continuous improvement remains essential as global tourism recovers and grows.
