Malkangiri district in southwestern Odisha witnessed heavy rainfall on Monday, prompting the district administration to declare an immediate holiday for all government and private schools as well as anganwadi centres across the region. The downpour resulted in significant water accumulation on roads and low-lying areas, with approximately one foot of rainwater reported at the Pangam area under police jurisdiction.
The most severe impact was felt on the Malkangiri-Jaypur road, a critical arterial route connecting two important towns in the district. Thick standing water made the stretch nearly impassable, leaving numerous vehicles stranded on both sides of the road. Local residents described chaotic conditions as cars, buses, and commercial transport got stuck in the flooded路段.
District Collector, who issued the closure order, stated that the decision was taken as a precautionary measure given the unpredictable weather situation and the risk of further rain. Officials from the disaster management cell have been placed on high alert, with emergency helplines activated for citizens requiring assistance.
Malkangiri district, bordering Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, has historically been vulnerable to heavy monsoon rains and flash floods during the rainy season. The area sits in a hilly terrain with several seasonal rivers, making it prone to water accumulation when rainfall is intense over a short period.
Local residents expressed frustration over repeated flood-related disruptions but acknowledged that the school closure was a necessary safety step. Parents said they would keep their children at home until further instructions are issued by the district authority.
