GAIL (Gas Authority of India Limited) has unveiled an ambitious artificial intelligence initiative aimed at transforming how its liquefied natural gas (LNG) operations function, presenting the details at Gastech 2026, one of the world's leading energy exhibitions. Sanjay Kumar, Director at GAIL, outlined how the company is moving beyond traditional LNG management approaches by integrating machine learning and predictive analytics into core segments of its gas supply chain.
According to presentations made at the event, GAIL is deploying AI models to improve demand forecasting across India's growing natural gas network. Rather than relying on historical consumption patterns alone, the company's new systems analyse real-time data — including seasonal trends, industrial activity indicators, and even weather forecasts — to predict where and when gas demand will spike. This capability is particularly critical for a country like India, where gas consumption has been rising steadily alongside expanding pipeline networks and new city gas distribution projects.
Supply chain optimisation forms another key pillar of GAIL's AI strategy. LNG imports require precise coordination between international procurement, shipping logistics, regasification terminal scheduling, and domestic pipeline distribution. Even minor disruptions can result in significant financial losses. GAIL's AI-driven platforms are being designed to model these complex dependencies and suggest optimal adjustments before bottlenecks materialise.
Risk management was also highlighted as a priority area. Sanjay Kumar noted that AI tools can assess geopolitical developments, shipping route disruptions, and price volatility in global LNG markets far more quickly than conventional analytical methods. The company is using these insights to build scenario-based contingency plans that can be activated in real time.
Industry observers say GAIL's push reflects a broader trend among energy companies worldwide, which are increasingly turning to artificial intelligence to navigate the dual pressures of rising energy demand and the transition toward cleaner fuels. Natural gas, often described as a bridge fuel, sits at the centre of India's energy transition strategy, making operational efficiency in the LNG value chain a strategic priority.
GAIL, which controls a substantial share of India's gas infrastructure including pipelines, regasification terminals, and city gas networks, is viewed as a bellwether for how India's public sector energy companies are adopting digital technologies. Analysts expect other PSU giants in the power and petroleum sectors to follow similar AI-driven modernisation pathways in the coming years.
