Over four decades, India has carved out a position as one of the world's select missile powers — but the road from ambitious blueprint to battle-ready arsenal was paved with repeated failures, international suspicion, and stiff engineering challenges.

The journey began in earnest in 1983, when the government launched the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP) under the visionary leadership of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, then director of the Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL). The programme set out to develop a full family of indigenous missiles — the short-range Prithvi, the intermediate-range Agni, the air defence Astra, the surface-to-air Akash, and the anti-tank Nag.

The early years were marked by humiliation. The first Prithvi test in 1988 failed outright. Agni-I, a critical technological demonstrator, experienced multiple setbacks throughout the early 1990s before its maiden success in 1994. Even then, subsequent flights encountered anomalies, reminding scientists and policymakers alike that missile technology tolerates no complacency.

Yet each failure became a data point. Engineers at DRDO refined guidance systems, propulsion, and re-entry technologies. By 2002, Agni-II had entered service. By 2018, the five-thousand-kilometre-range Agni-V was tested and operationalised. The BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, co-developed with Russia, further broadened India's strike options.

Today, India tests long-range missiles on a regular schedule from the Chandipur testing range off Odisha's coast and from Abdul Kalam Island in Ladakh Bay. The country has conducted more than 75 missile tests since 1989, with a success rate climbing to roughly 85 per cent in recent years — a figure that reflects both the maturation of the programme and the increasing complexity of missions attempted.

Strategists note that the indigenous missile portfolio gives India a credible minimum deterrence posture against both Pakistan and China, while also validating the DRDO ecosystem built around centres in Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Delhi. The programme also spawned spin-off technologies in composites, electronics, and rocket propulsion that benefit civilian sectors.

Defence analysts say the next frontier involves hypersonic glide vehicles, nuclear-capable submarine-launched ballistic missiles, and deeper indigenisation of critical subsystems currently sourced abroad.
