Governments across western and southern India have announced toll waivers for vehicles carrying Ganesh Chaturthi devotees traveling through major highway corridors, making it significantly cheaper for millions of pilgrims to reach temple destinations in the Konkan region and beyond.
The free toll scheme covers three key routes: the Atal Setu in Goa, which connects South and North Goa and dramatically cuts travel time between Panaji and the coastal belt; the Mumbai-Goa Expressway, also known as the NH66 corridor; and selected toll plazas on the Bengaluru bypass and other approach routes that funnel traffic toward Karnataka and Goa from the south.
Under the scheme, devotees traveling to celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi can obtain free digital or physical toll passes that allow them to pass through participating toll plazas without payment. The initiative is being coordinated by state transport departments and national highway authorities to ease the massive seasonal rush of travelers who typically flock to temples in Maharashtra, Goa, and Karnataka during the ten-day festival.
Officials say the move is aimed at reducing the financial burden on families undertaking pilgrimage journeys and encouraging safer, more organized travel during what is one of the busiest road travel periods of the year in the region. Traffic congestion on these corridors traditionally peaks in the days leading up to Ganesh Chaturthi, and the toll waiver is expected to help distribute traffic more evenly.
The Atal Setu alone handles thousands of vehicles daily, and the Mumbai-Goa expressway has become increasingly popular as a faster alternative to the old Coastal Highway. With Ganesh Chaturthi being one of India's most widely celebrated festivals, carrying enormous religious and cultural significance across Maharashtra and neighboring states, the toll waiver is seen as a practical step toward accommodating the massive movement of people.
Travelers are advised to check official notifications for exact dates of the waiver, vehicle eligibility criteria, and the application process for toll passes, which may be obtained through designated apps or customer care centers.
