Police in Chhattisgarh have arrested four men in connection with the alleged gangrape of a 17-year-old girl, a case that has again brought into focus the persistent threat faced by adolescent girls in the state.
According to investigating officers, the incident came to light after the victim reported the crime to local authorities. The probe revealed that the minor had gone out with one of the accused, a person she knew from her neighbourhood or nearby area. During the outing, the man allegedly convinced her to accompany him further and brought along three of his friends. Together, they took the girl to a village outskirts location, where all four are said to have sexually assaulted her.
The police, acting on the complaint, launched an immediate search operation and were able to apprehend all four accused within a short span. The suspects have been identified and are being held in judicial custody as investigations continue.
Given that the victim is under 18 years of age, the case is being handled under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, alongside relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code dealing with rape and gangrape. A senior police official confirmed that evidence collection, including a medical examination of the victim and forensic tracking of the accused, is underway.
Local residents and women's rights groups in the area have expressed shock and anger over the incident, calling it yet another grim reminder of the vulnerability of young girls even in semi-urban and rural pockets of Chhattisgarh. Activists have urged the state government to strengthen vigilance and ensure faster trial processes under the POCSO framework.
The case has been registered at a local police station, and officials say the investigation is ongoing. Legal proceedings against the accused are expected to begin shortly in a designated POCSO court.
