A domestic refrigerator underwent a catastrophic failure and exploded inside a residential home in Karnataka early Saturday morning, leaving four people dead and two others injured, according to local authorities. The incident occurred around 3:40 AM in a single-story house in a suburban locality, where five family members were asleep.
Neighbors reported hearing a loud blast followed by shouts of alarm, after which they rushed to the site and alerted emergency responders. Fire crew arrived within minutes to find smoke billowing from the house. By the time the fire was brought under control, four occupants had died from smoke inhalation and burns. Two survivors, believed to be in their twenties, were rescued from the bedroom and hospitalized in serious condition.
Police and fire department officials have stated that an inquiry is underway to determine the cause of the explosion. Possible explanations under consideration include an electrical short circuit in the refrigerator unit, a gas leak from the cooling system, or mechanical failure. The household appliance in question is believed to have been several years old and had not undergone recent servicing.
Household accidents involving refrigerators and other major appliances are not uncommon in India, particularly in older units that may have degraded wiring or compromised sealing systems. Fire safety experts have repeatedly warned that malfunctioning compressors and aging refrigerant gases can pose serious risks if left unchecked.
The district administration has announced compensation for the victims' families, and the injured are undergoing treatment at a nearby government hospital. Officials said they plan to inspect similar older units in the area as part of a broader safety awareness drive.
