Tim Sweeney, the Maryland-born self-taught programmer who founded Epic Games and created the global gaming phenomenon Fortnite, has assembled a private landholding that now exceeds 54,000 acres across North Carolina and surrounding states — making him one of the largest private landowners in the American South.
Sweeney began acquiring vulnerable forestland in western North Carolina around 2009, taking advantage of relatively low land prices before development pressures intensified across the region. Over the past decade and a half, his purchases have expanded dramatically, encompassing old-growth pine forests, Appalachian hardwoods, and critical watersheds that feed major population centers including Charlotte.
The centerpiece of his conservation effort is Epic Forest, a 46,800-acre tract in western North Carolina. Roughly 20,300 acres of that property are permanently protected through a partnership with The Nature Conservancy, which manages the land with strict restrictions on logging, mining, and commercial development. An additional 15,000 acres have been donated to the World Land Trust, which places them under permanent conservation easements focused on biodiversity preservation and carbon sequestration.
Conservation groups have praised Sweeney's approach. The Nature Conservancy noted that the preserved forests serve as vital wildlife corridors and carbon sinks, while also protecting headwater streams that supply clean drinking water to hundreds of thousands of residents in nearby urban areas.
Despite the protections, the remaining undeveloped portions of Sweeney's holdings face ongoing pressure from real estate developers and timber companies eyeing the increasingly desirable mountain communities of western North Carolina. Sweeney has publicly stated that he continues to evaluate additional acquisitions, particularly parcels that sit within ecologically sensitive zones or serve as buffers between protected areas.
Beyond North Carolina, Sweeney has also committed significant personal funding toward global reforestation initiatives through his climate philanthropy organization, including projects in Brazil, Ethiopia, and China, bringing his total environmental investment into the hundreds of millions of dollars.
