A Delhi court has convicted a Delhi University student in a case involving the fatal hit-and-run of two construction labourers on the Dwarka Expressway. The incident occurred in the early hours of a moonless night when the accused, driving at high speed, collided with the two workers who were crossing the multi-lane highway after finishing their overnight shift near a nearby construction site.
The two labourers, identified as Sunil and Ramesh from eastern Uttar Pradesh, were walking along the expressway shoulder when the speeding car slammed into them. Despite bystanders rushing them to a nearby hospital, both men succumbed to their injuries. The accused allegedly attempted to flee the scene but was apprehended by police within hours after neighbours provided details of the vehicle.
During the investigation, forensic evidence confirmed that the car belonged to the Delhi University student. Court documents reveal he had no valid driving license at the time of the incident and was reportedly driving well above the prescribed speed limit. His university has since suspended him pending further action.
The public prosecutor argued that the accused showed no remorse and had initially tried to deny involvement, claiming the car was stolen. However, multiple CCTV footage and eyewitness testimonies proved his presence at the scene. After reviewing the evidence, the judge handed down a conviction under Sections 279 and 304(A) of the Indian Penal Code, which deal with rash driving and causing death by negligence respectively.
The victim's families have expressed anguish but also gratitude for the verdict. Civil society groups have used the case to demand stricter enforcement of traffic laws and better infrastructure on expressways, including footpaths and adequate lighting.
Legal experts note that cases involving hit-and-run on highways in Delhi have risen steadily over the past five years, with convictions remaining low due to inadequate evidence collection at scenes.
