New Delhi: The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has announced plans to host a significantly enlarged edition of the International Kite Festival, known as Patang Utsav 2027, at Baansera in the national capital. The three-day event is slated to take place from January 15 to January 17, 2027, one of the most popular dates on Delhi's kite-flying calendar when winter skies are clear and conditions are ideal for aerial displays.
According to official estimates, the expanded festival is expected to draw approximately 100 kite flyers from across India and abroad. A notable feature of this year's lineup is the inclusion of 40 international participants hailing from more than ten countries, marking a substantial increase in global representation compared to previous editions.
Kite flying is a cherished cultural tradition in Delhi, especially during the month of January when the Makar Sankranti festival coincides with what locals call the 'kite season.' The skies above areas like Baansera, Mandi House, and Indira Gandhi Stadium typically transform into vibrant canvases of colour as thousands of kites soar simultaneously. The Patang Utsav serves as both a celebration of this beloved pastime and a platform for competitive kite flying, where enthusiasts showcase intricate designs, advanced techniques, and elaborate manoeuvres.
The DDA's decision to scale up the event reflects growing interest in making Delhi a global hub for kite festivals. Organisers expect the inclusion of international flyers to bring diverse styles and traditions from countries where kite flying holds deep cultural significance, such as China, Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, and several European nations.
Local residents have historically welcomed such events, though authorities continue to work on balancing the joy of kite flying with public safety concerns, particularly around manjha — the sharpened glass-coated string used in competitive kite fighting — and the management of crowds during peak flying hours.
Details regarding ticketing, registration procedures for participating flyers, and the full programme schedule are yet to be officially released by the DDA.
