Delhi Capitals fast bowler Abishek Porel was granted bail on Tuesday after spending 36 days in judicial custody, bringing an end to what has been a tense period for the Indian cricketer. The arrest, which took place on August 11, came in connection with a complaint alleging rape and intimidation filed by a young woman who is pursuing her medical studies in Karnataka.
According to the complaint, Porel and the woman were in a personal relationship, but it reportedly soured after Porel allegedly refused to accept responsibility for the situation and cut off communication. The woman then approached law enforcement, accusing him of sexual assault and threatening behavior. These allegations have been consistently rejected by Porel, who has maintained his innocence from the moment of his arrest through every court appearance.
The case drew significant attention because of Porel's association with the Delhi Capitals franchise in the Indian Premier League as well as his representation of Bengal in domestic cricket. Supporters and colleagues within the cricket fraternity expressed concern over the prolonged pre-trial detention, noting that bail proceedings can often stretch on for weeks before a decision is reached.
Porel was produced before the local court multiple times during his custody, where prosecutors opposed bail on grounds that they considered him a flight risk and feared he might influence witnesses. The court ultimately found the arguments for conditional release compelling, granting bail subject to standard terms that any violation could result in his rearrest.
