A serious construction accident occurred in the Kudasan area of Gandhinagar on Wednesday when a large crane collapsed on a building that is still under development. The collapse triggered a massive rescue operation, with multiple workers reported trapped beneath the fallen machinery and rubble.
According to preliminary reports, the crane suddenly gave way while it was positioned atop the partially constructed structure. Several laborers who were working on the ground floor and lower levels were caught in the aftermath, buried under heavy debris and broken parts of the crane itself. The exact cause of the collapse has not yet been determined, and authorities have not ruled out any possibility, including structural failure, equipment malfunction, or adverse weather conditions.
Eleven injured workers were extracted from the wreckage and immediately rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. Their conditions have not been officially confirmed, but local sources indicate that several are in critical condition. Medical teams at the receiving hospitals are providing emergency care to the casualties.
In response to the incident, the Gandhinagar administration dispatched more than four emergency vehicles, including fire tenders and police cars, to the site. Fire crews and rescue personnel worked through the afternoon to free those trapped under the collapsed materials. Recognizing the difficulty of moving the heavy debris by hand, officials arranged for a second crane to be brought in to lift and clear the wreckage safely.
The incident drew high-level attention, with the Gandhinagar Commissioner and the Deputy Chief Minister of Gujarat visiting the site to review the rescue effort and assess the situation firsthand. Both officials inspected the damage and spoke with rescue team members and hospital staff attending to the injured workers.
A police case has been registered, and an inquiry is expected to probe the circumstances surrounding the collapse. Construction safety regulations in Gujarat have faced scrutiny in recent years following several workplace accidents, and this incident is likely to renew calls for stricter enforcement of safety protocols on building sites across the state.
