JAMMU: In a significant counter-terrorism operation, security forces killed two terrorists in a targeted raid in Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir, officials confirmed on Tuesday. The operation, code-named Operation Sohan, was conducted by a joint team comprising the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and local intelligence agencies after precise inputs indicated the presence of heavily armed militants holed up in a dense forested area.
According to police sources, the operation began in the early morning hours when intelligence agencies received credible information about a gang of terrorists operating in the wooded tracts near the Pakistan-occupied border in Udhampur. A rapid deployment of CRPF personnel, along with Jammu and Kashmir Police special units, was carried out to encircle the suspected hideout before the militants could escape or blend into the local population.
As security forces closed in, the terrorists opened fire, prompting a fierce exchange that lasted for approximately two hours. Both militants were eventually neutralized in the encounter. The exact location of the encounter has not been disclosed to prevent any operational compromise.
A search operation was launched immediately after the firing ceased, and authorities recovered weapons, ammunition, and other equipment from the site. Security forces have not yet identified the dead militants or linked them to any specific terrorist outfit, but they stated that forensic analysis and verification processes are underway.
The operation comes amid sustained anti-terrorism efforts across the region, with security forces conducting regular patrols and intelligence-driven operations to root out militant networks. Officials described Operation Sohan as a well-planned action that demonstrated the effectiveness of inter-agency coordination.
A heightened security posture remains in place in the surrounding areas as a precautionary measure. Residents of nearby villages reported hearing loud gunfire during the operation but said no civilian casualties were reported.
