Chennai City Police carried out a massive special operation over the weekend, detaining 285 individuals who had prior criminal records, according to senior officials. The drive, which unfolded across multiple zones of the metropolitan city over approximately 48 hours, was designed to identify and apprehend known offenders who had either violated bail conditions or were on the run from outstanding warrants.
The operation involved coordinated deployments from several police zones, including Northern, Southern, Central, and Western divisions. Teams conducted targeted raids at locations frequently associated with criminal elements, as well as residential areas where suspects were known to reside. Those detained included individuals charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and other special laws, spanning categories from property offences to more serious violent crimes.
Police sources indicated that intelligence inputs gathered through regular surveillance played a key role in planning the sweep. District and city police leadership had reviewed lists of persons with criminal antecedents ahead of the operation to ensure that resources were directed toward high-priority targets. Many of those picked up were subsequently produced before local magistrates, with courts ordering further remand in several cases.
The special drive comes amid a broader push by the Tamil Nadu government to crack down on recidivist offenders and improve law-and-order conditions in urban centres. Authorities have previously cited rising concerns over repeat offenders operating openly in certain parts of the city. Police Commissioner-level reviews were reportedly held in the weeks leading up to the operation to finalise strategy and inter-zone coordination.
Local civic groups and resident associations had been pressing for stricter action against habitual offenders, particularly those linked to extortion, intimidation, and organised petty crime. While the immediate number of detentions has been announced, police said ongoing investigations may lead to additional arrests in the coming days as evidence gathered during the drive is processed.
