A violent tussle broke out in Punjab on Wednesday between workers of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), leaving senior BJP leader Vijay Sampla injured. The incident took place amid an ongoing controversy surrounding the installation of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar statues across the state.
According to eyewitness accounts and party sources, tensions had been building for days as various political groups expressed differing opinions on the placement and manner of installing statues of the legendary Constitution-maker. The situation escalated when a heated argument erupted between workers of the two parties, allegedly sparked by comments made by some BSP workers that were perceived as disrespectful towards Sampla.
The confrontation quickly turned physical as both sides began exchanging blows. Several workers from the two parties were seen pushing and shoving each other near the venue where the statue installation discussion was underway. In the chaos, Vijay Sampla sustained minor injuries and was immediately shifted to a nearby hospital for medical check-up and treatment.
BJP leaders have strongly condemned the assault, calling it an act of violence against a senior party functionary. They alleged that BSP workers instigated the clash deliberately. BSP leaders, on their part, denied allegations of premeditated violence and stated that the incident was a consequence of provocation.
Police officials confirmed that they received information about the clash and moved to the site to restore order. A case has been registered against the involved parties. Several workers from both sides were reportedly identified and questioned by law enforcement authorities.
The Ambedkar statue row has become a significant political flashpoint in Punjab, drawing attention from multiple parties. Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the principal architect of the Indian Constitution, remains a revered figure among marginalized communities, and any disagreement over his memorials tends to carry intense emotional and political weight.
