BENGALURU — A disturbing case of conspiracy and murder has come to light from Bengaluru, where police have arrested three people — a woman, her alleged lover, and her own mother — for killing the woman's husband, who had been bedridden and partially paralysed following a stroke some years ago.
According to police sources, the accused had planned the murder over several weeks before executing it. The victim, whose identity has not been fully disclosed in the initial report, had suffered a major stroke a few years back that left him partially paralysed and dependent on others for basic care. Despite the physical toll, he remained married to his wife for nearly two decades.
The case took a sinister turn when investigators discovered that the woman had been carrying on an affair for some time. Police believe the affair, combined with the burden of caring for an ailing spouse, pushed the couple and her mother to conspire to end the man's life. The trio allegedly administered poison or otherwise caused his death at their residence and subsequently staged the scene to make it look like the man had died of a cardiac episode.
The victim's death was initially reported to friends and family as a sudden heart attack, and funeral arrangements were reportedly set in motion. However, questions arose when the circumstances surrounding the death did not add up — particularly given that there was no prior history of serious cardiac illness and no medical documentation supporting such a diagnosis. Suspicious neighbours and relatives prompted the family to report the matter to police, who launched an investigation.
During questioning, the woman, her mother, and her alleged lover made conflicting statements. Eventually, under interrogation, they confessed to the murder and admitted to fabricating the story of a natural death. The police recovered key evidence from the victim's home, including medical records and any substances used in the killing.
This case echoes a disturbing pattern seen in other parts of India, where elderly or disabled spouses are sometimes targeted by family members seeking to end long-term caregiving responsibilities or to clear the way for romantic relationships. Social workers and legal experts have noted that such crimes often go unreported because the victims are isolated and dependent, making it easy for perpetrators to control the narrative around their deaths.
Police have registered a case under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code pertaining to murder and criminal conspiracy. The three accused are currently in judicial custody as the investigation continues.
