During that summer, temperatures in 48 contiguous U.S. states reached peaks not seen again until the present day. The agricultural devastation, mass migration, and health crises of that era stand as a sobering reference point for what extreme heat can do when combined with drought and poor land management.
According to climate monitors, the eight hottest months on record all fall within a stretch beginning in July 2023. That means not a single month between July 2023 and August 2026 failed to make the top-eight list — a streak that underscores how rapidly the planet's thermal envelope is expanding. Scientists say the pattern reflects both the accumulating effects of greenhouse gas emissions and the amplifying influence of natural variability, including an ongoing El Niño cycle that tends to push global temperatures higher.
The breach of the 1.5-degree threshold does not mean the Paris target has been permanently lost, experts caution. The threshold was always understood as a long-term average rather than a limit to be avoided on any single month or year.
