The Andhra Pradesh cybercrime cell has arrested a man accused of duping dozens of people out of nearly ₹93 lakh by dishing out fake promises of government employment. The arrest, made recently by officials of the state's cybercrime policing wing, has sent shockwaves through communities where such scams have long preyed upon aspirants eager to secure stable government positions.
According to police sources, the accused would take detailed personal information from job seekers, including their qualifications, caste certificates, and other documents typically required for government recruitment. In return, he would assure them of guaranteed selections through so-called "internal channels" and close contacts within the administration. Victims were asked to deposit large sums of money at various stages under the pretense that these payments were needed for processing fees, security deposits, or bribes to expedite applications.
Investigating officers said the fraud came to light after several victims filed individual complaints, citing similar patterns. Upon cross-referencing the cases, the cybercrime team found a common operator behind multiple frauds spanning different periods. The police tracked down the accused using digital forensics, financial transaction records, and coordination with local stations across the state.
Authorities stated that during searches conducted as part of the investigation, cash and electronic devices were seized, and an initial sum of approximately ₹93 lakh was accounted for as proceeds of the crime. A formal case has been registered under the relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act.
The arrest has drawn attention because job scams targeting young aspirants remain persistent in India, with fraudulent operators exploiting the intense competition for government posts. Officials warned that the accused may have been operating for an extended period before detection, suggesting the number of affected individuals could be higher than currently known.
