This move comes after months of intense feedback and protests from Agniveers, families, and political groups who have raised concerns about long-term career security after the short-term enlistment period ends.
Under the current Agnipath framework, recruits join the armed forces for a four-year stint as Agniveers and are not guaranteed any permanent position upon completion. A small percentage — currently around 25% — may be absorbed into regular permanent ranks, while the rest receive a one-time severance package and are expected to find employment in the civilian sector. This uncertainty has been the single largest point of criticism against the scheme since its launch.
Sources close to the defence ministry indicate that the proposed change would allow certain Agniveers who demonstrate exemplary performance and pass specific selection criteria to be offered permanent government employment, potentially even through central civil services or state-level government recruitment processes. The exact number of candidates to benefit and the timeline for implementation are yet to be officially confirmed.
Defence analysts say the move could serve as a strategic effort to revive public confidence in the Agnipath programme, which saw massive protests across several states when it was first introduced in 2022. Manyyoung men had enlisted with hopes of stable military careers but left without clear alternatives. By offering a pathway to permanent government employment mid-service, the government aims to address this gap without completely overhauling the existing recruitment architecture.
Opposition parties and veterans' groups have welcomed the development cautiously, calling it a step in the right direction but urging the government to release detailed guidelines soon. The Ministry of Defence is expected to issue an official notification in the coming weeks.
